The Russian Federation has expanded its combat aviation fleet with the incorporation of new Su-34 fighter-bombers, delivered by the United Aircraft Corporation, part of the Rostec State Corporation.

The delivery is part of the Russian Ministry of Defence’s defence order for the current year’s programme. Prior to official handover, the aircraft underwent a full cycle of factory tests, being evaluated in various operating modes, and subsequently flew to their destination airfield.

Designed to destroy ground, surface, and aerial targets — including infrastructure facilities — the Su-34 is also capable of carrying out aerial reconnaissance missions.

In 2024, Russia received six batches of this model, totalling between 12 and 14 aircraft. According to The Military Balance 2024, the Russian Aerospace Forces currently operate around 124 Su-34s, including 22 in the modernised version.

The first batch of the 2025 plan was delivered by Rostec in April this year. In July, however, a Su-34 crashed in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

In another significant incident, on 27 June, five Su-34s were damaged during a Ukrainian drone attack on the Marynovka military airfield in the Volgograd region. Three aircraft were completely destroyed and two sustained partial damage. The operation was attributed to Ukraine’s Security Service in cooperation with the Special Operations Forces.
